What is the Driver Improvement Program? What does it do for me? How often can I take it? |
THE DRIVER IMPROVEMENT PROGRAM/POINT & INSURANCE REDUCTION PROGRAM IS A 6-HOUR STATE APPROVED EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM THAT DEDUCTS FOUR POINTS FROM YOUR LICENSE, AND CAN REDUCE YOUR INSURANCE PREMIUM BY 10%.
IT CAN ONLY REDUCE POINTS FOR VIOLATIONS WHICH OCCURRED WITHIN AN 18 MONTH PERIOD BEFORE THE COMPLETION OF THE COURSE; YOU CANNOT REDUCE POINTS TO LESS THAN ZERO, NOR CAN YOU USE IT AGAINST FUTURE VIOLATIONS

What causes a suspension ? Do I have to worry ? |
THERE ARE SEVERAL WAYS TO GET YOUR LICENSE SUSPENDED. THE EASIEST WAY IS BY FAILING TO PAY FINES ON MOVING VIOLATIONS OR FAILING TO ANSWER A TICKET. OTHER WAYS MAY INCLUDE 3 SPEEDING TICKETS WITHIN AN 18-MONTH PERIOD, ACCRUING TOO MANY POINTS ON YOUR LICENSE W/IN AN 18 MONTH PERIOD, ALCOHOL OR DRUG RELATED TRAFFIC OFFENSES, UNDERAGE DRINKING/ZERO TOLERANCE VIOLATIONS, DRIVING W/O INSURANCE, TRAFFIC INFRACTIONS WHILE HAVING A JUNIOR PERMIT/LICENSE OR ON PROBATION, OR FOR FAILURE TO PAY CHILD SUPPORT AND CIVIL JUDGMENTS.
DRIVING WHILE SUSPENDED (AGGRAVATED UNLICENSED OPERATION) IS A CRIME, AND CAN LEAD TO HIGH FINES AND/OR JAIL.

Why a Warrant? |
SOME COURTS WILL EXECUTE A WARRANT FOR YOUR ARREST INSTEAD OF SUSPENDING YOUR DRIVING PRIVILEGES IF YOU DON’T APPEAR FOR COURT. WARRANTS CAN USUALLY BE CLEARED WITHOUT FEAR OF ARREST. |

What are the consequences of an uninsured vehicle? What if I wasn’t the owner? |
IF YOU DRIVE AN UNINSURED VEHICLE, OR PERMIT SOMEONE ELSE TO DRIVE YOUR CAR, YOU FACE A SUSPENSION OF YOUR LICENSE AS WELL AS SIGNIFICANT FINES AND CIVIL PENALTIES- IT DEPENDS UPON THE COURT AND THE CIRCUMSTANCES. IF YOU DID NOT OWN THE VEHICLE, YOU SHOULD BE SAFE; HOWEVER; NYS MIGHT ELECT TO GO AFTER THE REGISTERED OWNER. |

Do out-of-state tickets affect my license? |
NO. NYS DOES NOT record out-of-state violations, excepT FOR MOVING VIOLATIONS IN ONTARIO AND QUEBEC, AND DRUG AND ALCOHOL OFFENSES.
HOWEVER, IF YOU GET TICKETS FROM OUT OF STATE, DON’T IGNORE THEM- FAILURE TO APPEAR OR PAY TICKETS CAN LEAD TO A SUSPENSION IN NEW YORK. |
